Trio House Press has three reading periods throughout the year: two awards reading periods and one open reading period.  Guidelines for all are listed below the reading period descriptions. Please note that we are an environmentally conscious press and only accept manuscripts through our online submissions manager at the bottom of the page.  CLICK HERE to learn more about our selection process.

Trio House Press Poetry Book Awards: November 1-April 30
 

Trio House Press gives two awards annually: the Trio Award for First or Second Book for emerging poets, and the Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence for a book of poems contributing in an innovative and distinct way to American poetry.

 

The Trio Award for First or Second Book includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books.  The Trio Award for First or Second Book is only open to poets with less than two books published.

 

The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books.  The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence is open to ALL poets, regardless of publication history.


Our reading period for both poetry awards is November 1 through April 30.  Manuscripts received outside of this reading period will not be considered. Our entry fee is $25 per manuscript for all award reading periods.  



Trio House Press Creative Nonfiction Book Award: Aurora Polaris: February 15 - August 30


Trio House Press is pleased to offer the Aurora Polaris Award for a book of creative nonfiction up to 80,000 words, open to writers at any stage of their career, in any form of creative nonfiction. The award includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books. Entry fee is $25 per manuscript.


We frequently solicit manuscripts from our award reading period that are not selected by judges. We also solicit manuscripts that will promote diversity, broaden our aesthetic, appeal to readers, and contribute to our catalogue of titles.


Open Reading Period 2023: TBA

 

Our submissions process adheres to and supports all ethical standards and guidelines outlined by the CLMP.  Judges are forwarded unmarked manuscripts for consideration.  Relatives and current or former students of judges are not eligible for publication.

Guidelines for Trio House Submissions

  

  • The Trio Award for First or Second Book is only open to poets with less than two books published.
  • The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence is open to ALL poets, regardless of publication history.
  • The Aurora Polaris Award is open to all writers, regardless of publication history.
  • Poetry manuscripts must be 48-70 pages of poetry (excluding title page, table of contents, and all front matter), written in English by a poet residing within the U.S.; prose manuscripts must be 80,000 words or fewer.
  • Translations are not eligible for publication.
  • Manuscripts must be sent in a single word doc. or docx. file. with no identifying information.
  • Include and upload your cover letter with your bio and contact information in the cover letter option area.
  • Include an acknowledgement page of individual poems published within the manuscript.  The manuscript as a whole must not be previously published.
  • Your name or other identifying materials must not appear anywhere else upon your manuscript.
  • Reading fees are required during each submissions period ($25 for awards; $20 for open reading).
  • Multiple award submissions are accepted as long as a $25 fee accompanies each award submission.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted as long as we are notified immediately if your manuscript is chosen elsewhere.
  • Relatives and current or former students of judges are not eligible for awards or publication during our contest submissions period.
  • Do not include any identifying material, including your name, bio, or contact information on your manuscript. Please include this in your cover letter and upload your cover letter separately. 
  • Open reading period submissions must include a detailed two page cover letter outlining your bio, publishing history, and marketing plan along with your manuscript.  You may insert this cover letter at the beginning of your file in front of your manuscript for the open reading period only.
  • No edits can be made to manuscripts after you submit your manuscript.  However, if chosen for award or publication, edits can be made prior to final proofs.
  • In the unlikely event that, due to unexpected illness or life events, that a judge is unable to select an award winner, a member of the Trio House Press Editorial staff will select the award winner.
  • Your submission acknowledges that you understand and agree to all guidelines.
  • Poets will not be personally notified of contest results.  Please check our website and Facebook pages for results sometime during the summer months.
